Chapter Fifteen

Energy surrounded him. Though he wasn’t sure what it was from, Rob felt it. The energy built, leaving him with an understanding of the power. He couldn’t do anything about it, only that it felt like it pushed down, attempting to constrict him.

An instinctive part of him reacted, pushing against that constriction as he felt something like it before. Rob knew that power from Boris’ influence when he tamped down Rob’s consciousness, forcing Rob to constrict his essence into a tight ball inside himself. He reacted the same way as he had all those times with Boris. Rob had to tighten it even more than what was comfortable for him, squeezing it into a vaguely constricted ball of energy.

And it protected him. Rob felt that pressure squeezing around him, even though he couldn’t tell who was doing it. Could it be Serena or Griffin? Did they decide he was a threat? His essence certainly was different enough from theirs that they might decide…

No. Not them. They weren’t with him.

But it pressed on him. It was a very different sense than he had from Boris, and his dragon mind ability, when he pressed down on Rob. Given that Rob progressed to dragon mind, he found it difficult to believe either Serena or Griffin could push on him like that, though if anybody could do it, it would be them.

And, as much as Rob wanted to argue otherwise, he had to believe Serena would do whatever she thought necessary to help her mother, especially if she felt it could save her.

He flexed, and as he did, he pushed against a heavy weight. Rob thought about all his lessons from the arctic cats, shifting that weight, sliding around, using his dragon mind ability, but it didn’t work as well as he hoped. It was like the weight was alive, so as he shifted, using his connection, a part of him struggled even more than it should. Rob strained to overcome it, but every time he attempted to push against the heaviness, some part of it squeezed against him again.

“Relax,” a voice said from a distance.

Everything within Rob went cold, and he withdrew his essence, constricting it down, tightening it into a ball deep within him. It was the only way he could protect himself and his mind from the essence. He couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed, yet, as it built, he recognized a greater power.

The only thing he could think of was that it was a part of the Netheral.

Though never so directly or heavy, Rob undoubtedly felt the Netheral on his essence.

But it was enormous. Its power was unlike anything he felt before. It was foreign and overwhelming, to where he didn’t think he could withstand the power. If it attempted to shatter his essence, Rob knew there was nothing he could do. Some part of him would be stripped away, left with little more than a fragmented mind. Shards, no differently than the Netheral.

“Who are you?”

Rob sensed movement, and it slithered toward him like a snake, but it was hot.
